SUPER 14- Discussion - Wake up SANZAR! a)To compete financially in the real world Super Rugby needs a full season - a season that takes in something like 20 weeks. b)expansion should happen for the 2010 season in planned steps that take us from 14 to 24 teams over the next decade.
c) ALL teams should be franchises, with an open bidding system for those franchises, similar to the Indian Premier League. In those areas where there is already a Super 14 franchise, the local Rugby union should hold a small stake in the team but the team would be for sale on the open market. The local union should receive the revenue from the initial sale of the team and then pay for whatever share of its team it desires. d)Expansion in 2010 should occur firstly into the Asian market and then into the North American market. Now all of the above may just be far too much for the delicate souls in South Africa and New Zealand. But this does not mean that Australia should sit back and use this as an excuse. If the ARU had any balls, they would say - this is what we are doing guys, you can join us, or bugger off! Get on with it ARU - show some vision, you dont need the NZRU or SARFU to hold your hand. And while we are on the subject of SANZAR's dinosaur like behaviour just a few thoughts to ponder...
How many of the worlds major sporting competitions do not have their own dedicated website? I can name only one, Super Rugby run by SANZAR. Why dont they have a dedicated website? Because they are dinosaurs.
Perhaps its time for SANZAR to commission another group of consultants - they seem to be good at that!
